The applicant's (the child's) birth certificate

Where to find it: The civil registry of your country of birth; with a translation if not in English.

Birth certificate of your U.S. citizen parent

Where to find it: The civil registry of the country or state where that parent was born.

Proof of that parent's U.S. citizenship

Where to find it: U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate (N-550) or citizenship certificate (N-560), FS-240, or a valid passport.

USCIS fee payment, or Form I-912 if you request a fee waiver

Where to find it: The current amount is on the uscis.gov fee calculator. By mail you pay by card (G-1450) or bank account (G-1650); paid to USCIS separately.

Clear copies of each document, not originals

Where to find it: A copy shop, or your phone camera in good light with the whole document in the frame.

Marriage certificates of the citizen parent

If the citizen parent married (every certificate)

Where to find it: The civil office of the state or country where each marriage took place.

Proof of how each earlier marriage ended

Only if the applicant or the parent had a marriage that ended

Where to find it: A certified divorce decree, death certificate, or annulment.

Proof that the parent lived in the U.S. before the birth

Only if you claim citizenship from birth

Where to find it: School, work, or military records; deeds or leases; Social Security reports; statements from third parties.

Copy of the applicant's Green Card

Only if you claim citizenship after birth, through the parent

Where to find it: The physical card; copy both sides onto one sheet if you can.
