What is the G-639 for?
The file can include earlier applications, notices, entry records, and decisions. Many people request it before starting a new filing, to know what USCIS has about them.
The official records page says that, since January 22, 2026, these requests are submitted online, and that submitting them this way is generally the only acceptable method. Most carry no cost.

Who usually files it?
- According to the USCIS instructions: a person requesting a copy of their own file, authorizing USCIS to release their data to them.
- According to the USCIS instructions: someone requesting another person's records with their signed consent, or a deceased relative's with proof of death.
- According to the USCIS instructions: it does not serve to request records from other agencies, such as Customs (CBP) or the immigration court, which have their own process.
