What is the I-131 for?
Each document is meant for a different situation, and the box you check at the start changes the rest of the form and the evidence it asks for.
The official instructions describe each one: who requests it, how long it usually lasts, whether it is filed from inside or outside the country, and when a biometrics appointment is needed.
Leaving the United States with an open case has consequences that depend on your case. That question needs legal advice, and Paso Libre does not answer it.
Who usually files it?
- According to the USCIS instructions: a permanent resident planning to be outside the country for a long period who requests a reentry permit.
- According to the USCIS instructions: a person with refugee or asylee status who needs a refugee travel document.
- According to the USCIS instructions: someone with a pending adjustment of status, TPS, or DACA who requests advance parole to travel and return.
