What is the I-765 for?
The form is the request; the card is what arrives afterwards. They are two different things, and many people call both the same: “the permit”.
The I-765 is not for a single situation. The official instructions list dozens of categories, each with a code such as (c)(8) or (a)(12), and each with its own evidence and its own fee.
Which category applies to a person depends on their case, and that is a legal question. Paso Libre does not choose your category: you provide it, and we fill it in as given.
Who usually files it?
- According to the USCIS instructions: a person with a pending adjustment of status who asks to work while waiting.
- According to the USCIS instructions: someone with DACA, TPS, or a pending asylum application who requests or renews their permit under that category.
- According to the USCIS instructions: certain students and spouses of work-visa holders, in the categories the instructions list.
