What is the N-600 for?
The instructions describe two routes: citizenship at birth abroad to a citizen parent, and citizenship acquired afterwards, for example when a parent naturalizes while the child is a minor and a resident.
The rules depend on the child's date of birth, the parents' status, and how long they lived in the United States. They are written in the instructions and vary by year.
Whether your child obtained citizenship through one of those routes is a legal question. Paso Libre describes the form and fills in your answers; it does not decide that question.
Who usually files it?
- According to the USCIS instructions: a citizen parent requesting the certificate for a child under 18.
- According to the USCIS instructions: an adult requesting their own certificate because, per the instructions, they obtained citizenship through their parents.
- According to the USCIS instructions: it is not for someone applying for citizenship through their own naturalization; for that there is the N-400.
